Artist turns love of photography into thriving printing business
Rob Penner knows something about fine art printing. For the past 35 years, Penner has been involved in all facets of photography, printing, and fine art, from production to post-production. He started his career as a fashion photographer in New York in the heady days of the ‘70s; photographing the likes of Diana Ross and Bianca Jagger and frequenting Andy Warhol’s Factory and Studio 54. He attended Pratt Institute and started working in advertising doing graphic production where he learned all aspects of printing from traditional press to digital printing. He opened Beacon Fine Art Printing, specializing in digital archival printing, custom art reproduction, edition printing for artists, collectors and galleries while still doing his own personal photography.
“It’s helpful having experience on both sides of the coin, seeing things as a visual artist, then being able to turn them into a graphic production platform — taking someone’s idea and turning it into a tangible piece of art,” Penner explains.
